. Editorial – Hugh Maunder Ceres For Clean Energy From far across the barren landscape in Iceland one can see a towering piece of machinery which houses a mighty drill. It drills down towards a layer of volcanic rock thousands of metres below the surface, just short of a chamber of molten magma hot enough to melt a lead pipe. This is where the Iceland Deep Drilling Project (IDDP) intends to capture heat for geothermal energy and use it to make electricity. Iceland would be ideal for such a development. Two tectonic plates run through the island’s centre, making it a hot spot for volcanoes and the magma that fuels geothermal power plants. The action is 5 000 metres below the surface where the crew has created the world’s deepest geothermal well. Temperatures hit 430́˚ Celsius at that depth making water so hot that it takes what’s known as a “supercritical” form at high pressure, a state not solid, liquid or gas. It means that, in future, more power can be produced in less area with less environmental impact and, hopefully, at less cost. If all goes well, the site could be operable in a few years. South Africa’s biggest earthquake in recent history hit the Ceres area in 1969. The 6.3 magnitude quake claimed seven lives. The spatial temporal spacing of the earth tremors suggest a shallow tectonic failure along ancient Saron-Groenhoh lineament. How far down is the molten Magma?
