Fellowship Slots
None noted for the coming week Biffy said that there might be a problem with the “Tree Planting” due to land demonstrations by local inhabitants. Keela should be notified by members as to their soup contributions for the next meeting on 31 May. Barry informed us of the latest developments in the refurbishing the interior of the City Hall; the first concert after which will be on 4 August.
Guest Speaker
Biffy reported back on the recent District Conference, and showed slides of the trip. (See incriminating pic. on the last page on how delegates behaved at Conference – Ed.)
- The new RI President is Barry Rassin and his theme for 2018-2019 is “Be The Inspiration” and all are asked to be inspired in what we do.
- The new DG, Casper Kruger, does not want his visit to be for a speech to make to us, but rather to attend a business meeting to discuss our work and projects. His visit to us is scheduled for 1st November.
- The Knysna Fires project, to which we had contributed, raised R1,2m from Rotary Clubs.
- Next year’s District Conference will be held at the Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West.
- The guest speaker was Michelle McLean-Bailey who was Miss Namibia and then Miss World. She started an NGO in Windhoek, to deal with orphans, which is now run by her parents.
- Wynberg Rotary Club was often mentioned for our work and efforts.
- Biffy recommended that the POETS, which is vitally important, should be attended by the PP, PE and Pres. next year.
- The possibility that an International Convention may be hosted in either Cape Town or Durban, is getting closer to reality. The introduction and thanks to Biffy were by Bruce
Past President’s Quiz
Nobody identified the lines from the Josh Groban/Celine Dion song, ‘The Prayer’.
Swindle
Pippa drew Bruce’s name but he only drew the nine of spades (shame!!) the R15 attendance prize went to our visitor, Kenny.

Tailpiece Grandfather of the Year A woman in a supermarket is following a grandfather and his badly-behaved grandson. He has his hands full with the child screaming for candy, cookies, all sorts of things. The grandpa is saying in a controlled voice, “Easy, William, we won’t be long, easy boy.” The boy has another outburst and she hears the grandpa calmly say, “It’s okay William. Just a couple more minutes and we’ll be out of here. Hang in there, lad.” At the checkout the little horror is throwing items out of the shopping cart. Grandpa says again in a controlled voice, “William, William, relax buddy, don’t get upset. We’ll be home in five minutes, stay cool William.” Very impressed, she goes outside to where the grandfather is loading his groceries and the boy into the car. She says, “It’s none of my business, but you were amazing in there. I don’t know how you did it. That whole time you kept your composure, and no matter how loud and disruptive he got, you just calmly kept saying things would be okay. William is very lucky to have you as his grandpa.” “Thanks,” says the grandpa, “but I am William. This little bastard’s name is Kevin”.
