Denmark-Norway entered the Napoleanic Wars on France side in 1807. This had a devastating effect on the Norwegian economy as the Royal Navy hindered export by ship and import of food. Sweden invaded Norway the following year, but after several Norwegian victories a cease-fire was signed in 1809. After pressure from Norwegian merchants license trade was permitted with corn from Denmark to Eastern Norway in exchange for Norwegian timber export to the U.K. Following the Battle of Leipzig in 1813 the Treaty of Kiel signed on 14th January 1814 ceded Norway to Sweden. The heir to the Danish crown had since 1813 been Governor-General of Norway. He travelled to Trondheim to gain support for his person and assembled twenty one prominent citizens at Eidsvoll on 16th February 1814 where he had claim to the thrown. They rejected a new absolute Monarch and instead wanted a liberal constitution, therefore representatives from the entire country would be selected to create a constitution. The 112 members of the Constitution Assembly gathered and after six weeks of discussions concluded the work on the Constitution of Norway on 17th May 1814.

Attendance to Biffy 0813259570 or [email protected]. SLOTS Jackie: Names on lists please for Opera in a Convent Garden and the Beer Tasting. Rotaract Kiddies Camp is on this weekend. All welcome to go and join any time but particularly invited to join them at the Spur in Fish Hoek on Sat at 12pm. MEETING MINUTES Justin needed little introduction of Kathleen as she had already been to the club to present to us on Refugees. Kathleen gave a very interesting talk on tsunami’s. Most common causes are Earthquakes – most common & destructive (Generally 7.0+ Richter scale & <70km depth), Underwater landslides or volcanoes & Cosmic event. Ocean-wide warning systems are found in the Pacific (most sophisticated), Indian Ocean (still not as good as it should be), Caribbean (in its infancy) & Northeast Atlantic, Mediterranean & Adjacent Seas (barely there). The best advice for surviving a tsunami is run for higher ground or if in a boat head out to sea. Tsunami’s is SA? Most likely on KZN coast, but CT not immune and would be coming from the Indian Ocean (more likely). We would have several (10+) hours’ notice and these would be down to the minute.

JACKPOT: The jackpot stood at R1 670.00. Keela drew Biffy’s name who only managed the 4♥. Biffy then drew her own name for attendance and walked away with R18 for her troubles. PRESIDENT’S QUOTE: Life was much easier when Apple and Blackberry were just fruits. Let us think of education as the means of developing our greatest abilities, because in each of us there is a private hope and dream which, fulfilled, can be translated into benefit for everyone and greater strength for our nation. John F Kennedy TAILPIECE
