ROTARY WYNBERG’S TRIBUTE TO MADIBA As Rotarians we are inspired by the life of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, the father of a democratic South Africa, and of all in our wonderful country. He understood with enormous clarity what it means that all are made in the image of God and deserve equal respect and dignity. It was an idea he hoped to live to enjoy, but it was also an idea for which, if necessary, he was prepared to die. He was a man of peace, until it became clear that the South African authorities would not see reason. Despite being imprisoned for 27 years, he was forgiving, warm, loving and kind. He was self deprecating, a man of humour with a characteristic smile. He reached out to his enemies so as to engage with them and make them partners in creating a different South Africa. He embraced his own culture and the culture of others, except where either dehumanised people. He embraced the world, and was embraced by a world which sorely needs a man of his stature, when necessary speaking truth to the most powerful men and women on the globe. He freed black people from subjugation and oppression, and he freed white people of prejudice, fear and guilt. He understood the human condition- he recognised that people were not born to hurt and hate one another, but did so out of ignorance and prejudice, and that all people were capable of change for the good. He loved and committed himself to children. He understood better than most what “Service above self” really means, and embodied the tenets of the 4 way test. As Rotarians we are challenged by his example to reach greater heights in service to and in partnership with our fellow South Africans.
