The Rotary Club of Wynberg has committed to launching the Baby College Project, an initiative aimed at providing early stimulation to underprivileged infants through parent education. Spearheaded by Alan Jackson, the project draws inspiration from Geoffrey Canada’s successful program in Brooklyn, where structured group sessions for expectant and new parents led to measurable improvements in children’s development. The Wynberg chapter plans to replicate this model at the Retreat Community Health Centre, with support from the University of Cape Town’s Department of Family Medicine. The initiative underscores the belief that early stimulation significantly enhances a child’s academic and life outcomes, particularly for those born into disadvantaged circumstances.

Rotarians express confidence in the project’s potential to expand beyond Wynberg, envisioning collaboration with other Peninsula clubs and eventually reaching across South Africa. The editorial highlights the urgency of addressing developmental gaps in vulnerable communities, framing the Baby College as both a local and scalable solution. By fostering parental engagement and education, the project seeks to create a lasting impact on child welfare, aligning with Rotary’s mission to drive meaningful change through community-focused efforts.
