Biffy: Confirmed numbers for the raid to Cape of Good Hope Rotary (Tuesday 24th April) Monique introduced Professor Armitage, Professor of Civil Engineering at UCT, who spoke on Urban Water Management, with particular reference to Water Sensitive Cape Town. At first the club was dubious when we were told that the City of Cape Town had actually done a good job in water management, but we were soon convinced. A salient point was that during the current drought of 2015 / 2016 / 2017, the rainfall was so far below average to be a 1 in a thousand year episode.
Guest Speaker
Prof Armitage proved to be an informative and very interesting speaker with a wealth of knowledge on ‘Water Sensitive Urban Design’, with the ultimate aim of keeping water in the city. A number of methods of water reclamation were discussed, and sound advice given… if only the cities of the world will listen. More information can be found at www.futurewater.uct.ac.za . Prof Armitage was thanked by Monique, and many other club members during question time afterwards and at dinner.
President’s Sweetie Pie Swindle
Two Sweetie pie awards were made, one was given. We all agreed this was a swindle, as the awards were to String and Graham, for swindling… I mean entertaining all of us. For R710 Stephanie drew Lina, who only managed the Jack of Hearts. Biffy received the attendance award of R16. Drinks all round!

Hugh’s Nughs The 2018 London Marathon (42,16 K} was the 38th annual mass participation race and took place on Sunday, 22 April 2018. An estimated number of 40,000 runners on the start line were formally started by Queen Elizabeth. It was officially recorded as the hottest London Marathon to date at a peak temperature of 24,1°C (75,4°F). There were great warnings about the heat and only some 38 000 finished the race. The Comrades Marathon is run in South Africa with an average daytime temperature at Pietermaritzburg of 24°C (75,2°F). The Queen formally started the race from a special podium in front of the Round Tower in the grounds of Windsor Castle by pushing the start button at 10:00 am. This was 110 years after the 1908 London Marathon was started at the same venue by Queen Mary, grandmother of the Queen. One runner, 29-year-old professional chef Matt Campbell, died after collapsing during the race. Another chef taking part was Gordon Ramsay, the celebrity chef who is famous all over the world for his skill and fiery personality. He had run ten consecutive London Marathons up to 2009 and this time he was running, alongside his wife and children, in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity. The men’s elite race saw the entry of British runner Mo Farah, who, despite a mix-up at a water station, managed to finish third in a new British record of 2:06:21. It is understood that the marshals were so busy taking photos of their hero that they forgot to hand him the water. The race winner, Eliud Kipchoge, from Kenya, was on pace for a world record, but slowed in the final stages, finishing with a time of 2:04:17. Thus he ran at over 20km per hour (i.e. under 15 minutes for every 5K park run distance). The women’s race winner was Vivian Cheruiyot, also from Kenya, in a time of 2:18:31, just 14 minutes behind Kipchoge

Tailpiece Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson go on a camping trip. After a good dinner and a bottle of wine, they retire for the night, and go to sleep. Some hours later, Holmes wakes up and nudges his faithful friend. “Watson, look up at the sky and tell me what you see.” “I see millions and millions of stars, Holmes” replies Watson. “And what do you deduce from that?” Watson ponders for a minute. “Well, astronomically, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Leo. Horologically, I deduce that the time is approximately a quarter past three. Meteorologically, I suspect that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. Theologically, I can see that God is all powerful, and that we are a small and insignificant part of the universe.” But what does it tell you, Holmes?” Holmes is silent for a moment. “Watson, you idiot!” he says. “Someone has stolen our tent!”
